Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for Women in Recovery

Starting Your Financial Journey with Brighter Horizon

Q: What is Brighter Horizon, and why is this program for women in recovery?

A: Brighter Horizon is a volunteer-led non-profit dedicated to teaching practical personal finance skills. We recognize that financial stability is a cornerstone of long-term sobriety and independence. Our programs are uniquely focused on the challenges faced by women rebuilding their lives, using real-world stories and compassionate guidance to help you regain financial control without judgment.

Q: What will I learn in your workshops?

A: Our programs focus on immediate, practical skills critical for life in recovery. Topics include:

  • The First Budget: Creating a realistic, simple spending plan that prioritizes sobriety and essential needs (housing, childcare, recovery-related costs).
  • Healing Your Credit: Strategies for obtaining and reviewing your credit report, dealing with collections, and beginning to rebuild your score.
  • Debt as a Story: Understanding and addressing debt accumulated during active addiction in a non-shameful way.
  • Building a Safety Net: Starting an emergency fund (even with small amounts) to manage unexpected expenses without creating financial stress that could threaten sobriety.

Q: Is this program sensitive to financial stress as a relapse trigger?

A: Absolutely. Our curriculum is designed by professionals who understand the intense connection between financial anxiety and relapse. We teach calm, step-by-step strategies to manage money, helping you replace fear and impulse with structure and control.

Programs & Services

Q: What types of programs do you offer for women in recovery?

A: We offer small-group workshops and we often partner with local recovery centers to bring our education directly to their residents.

Q: Do I need to be completely debt-free or employed to join a workshop?

A: Not at all. Our primary goal is to help you establish a stable foundation. We focus on creating a budget based on your current income (whether it's employment wages, social security, or family support) and setting realistic, small, attainable financial goals.

Q: Do you offer one-on-one financial advising?

A: No. As an educational non-profit, we provide general financial principles and recovery-focused strategies. We do not provide personalized, one-on-one investment or financial advisory services. We encourage you to work with your sponsor or counselor as you apply these principles to your unique situation.

Support & Communication

Q: How can I volunteer or support Brighter Horizon’s mission?

A: We rely on volunteers. If you are a professional in finance, education, or business, or if you are a woman with a passion for recovery support, please see our Volunteer Page. If you wish to donate, your contributions go directly toward keeping our programs free for the women who need them most.

Q: How quickly can I expect a response if I email you?

A: We are committed to responding to all inquiries sent to info@thebrighterhorizon.com within 48-72 hours. We are a volunteer-led team, and we appreciate your patience as we manage communications while serving the community.
